Recall of Powdered Similac Formula

Abbott Laboratories is recalling about 5 million containers of Similac powdered infant formula due to possible contamination by beetles or larvae of the bugs.

Abbott says the recalled formula “poses no immediate health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract.Consult a doctor if symptoms persist for more than a few days.”

The recall involves Similac powder sold in plastic containers and certain product sold in 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce, and 12.9-ounce cans.

Fisher-Price Recalls Little People Play 'n Go Campsite™

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, in cooperation with Fisher-Price has announced a voluntary recall of the Little People Play 'n Go Campsite™. The plastic Sonya Lee figure in the play set can break at the waist, exposing small parts that pose a choking hazard to young children. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. They have received eight reports of the Sonya Lee figure breaking. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.

Peachtree Playthings Children's Fork and Spoon Sets Recalled

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Peachtree Playthings, today announced a voluntary recall of Scooby Doo, Tweety and Batman Fork and Spoon Sets. Consumers should immediately take the recalled fork and spoon sets away from children and return them to Dollar Tree or Deals for a full refund. Peachtree Playthings has received one report of a middle prong detaching from the fork. No injuries have been reported.

Daiso To Pay $2M Penalty and Must Stop Importing Children's Products and Toys Into U.S.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced last week that Daiso Holding USA Inc., Daiso Seattle LLC, of Seattle, WA, and Daiso California LLC, of Hayward, CA have agreed to pay a $2.05 million civil penalty and stop importing children's products and toys into the United States. This is a result of alleged violations of federal safety laws. Some of the violations cited include importing, distributing and selling toys with illegal levels of lead content, illegal levels of lead paint and phthalates, small parts on toys intended for children younger than three years old, and products that lack required warning labels.

"This landmark agreement for an injunction sets a precedent for any firm attempting to distribute hazardous products to our nation's children" said CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum. "We are committed to the safety of children's products and we will use the full force of our enforcement powers to prevent the sale of harmful products."

McNeil Announces Voluntary Recall of Certain OTC Products

In consultation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), McNeil Consumer Healthcare announced a voluntarily recall certain lots of OTC products on January 15, 2010. The company is initiating this recall following an investigation of consumer reports of an unusual moldy, musty, or mildew-like odor that, in a small number of cases, was associated with temporary and non-serious gastrointestinal events.These include nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, or diarrhea. This precautionary action is voluntary and has been taken in consultation with the FDA.

Consumers who purchased product from the lots included in this recall should stop using the product and contact McNeil Consumer Healthcare for instructions on a refund or replacement.

Drop Side Cribs Recalled by Caramia Furniture

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Caramia Furniture, announced a voluntary recall of their Diane Crib. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Diane crib and contact Caramia Furniture to receive a free replacement drop side. The slats on the cribs drop-side can detach from the top and bottom rails, posing fall and entrapment hazards to the child. They have received 18 reports of slats detaching from the rails of the crib, but no injuries have been reported.

HappyBaby and HappyTot Voluntarily Recalled

Nurture, Inc., is voluntarily recalling selected varieties of HAPPYTOT Stage 4 and HAPPYBABY Stage 1 and Stage 2 pouch meals. These products are being recalled due to a packaging defect that potentially could cause the pouches to swell or leak. Swollen or leaking pouches could indicate that the products may contain bacteria that could potentially cause illness. Thankfully, no illness has been reported.

Amby Baby Motion Beds/Hammocks Recalled Due to Infant Suffocation Deaths

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Amby Baby USA, announced a voluntary recall of Amby Baby Motion Beds. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately and contact Amby Baby USA for a free repair kit.

Recall of Play Yards with Bassinets Due to Suffocation Hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Safety 1st and Eddie Bauer, have announced a voluntary recall of the Safety 1st Disney Care Center™ Play Yard and Eddie Bauer Complete Care Play Yard. You should stop using recalled products immediately and contact Dorel Juvenile Play Group for a repair kit.

The one piece metal bars supporting the floorboard of the bassinet attachment can come out of the fabric sleeves and create an uneven sleeping surface, posing a risk of suffocation or positional asphyxiation. Thankfully no injuries have been reported.

They were sold at Babies “R” Us, Kmart, Sears, Target and Walmart from January 2007 through October 2009.

Product Recall: Stork Craft to Recall More Than 2.1 Million Drop-Side Cribs

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc. announced the voluntary recall of more than 2.1 million Stork Craft drop-side cribs, including about 147,000 Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. The recall involves approximately 1,213,000 units distributed in the United States.
Parents and caregivers are urged to immediately stop using the recalled cribs. Consumers should contact Stork Craft to receive a free repair kit that converts the drop-side on these cribs to a fixed side. They should wait for the free repair kit, and not attempt to fix the cribs without the kit. Parents should find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby. .

According to the CPSC, "The cribs’ drop-side plastic hardware can break, deform, or parts can become missing. In addition, the drop-side can be installed upside-down, which can result in broken or disengaged plastic parts. All of these problems can cause the drop-side to detach in one or more corners. When the drop-side detaches, it creates space between the drop-side and the crib mattress. The bodies of infants and toddlers can become entrapped in the space which can lead to suffocation. Complete detachment of drop-sides can lead to falls from the crib."

CPSC Urges Stop Use of “My Baby Soother” Pacifiers

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is urging parents and caregivers to immediately stop giving the “My Baby Soother” pacifiers to their children. The pacifiers failed to meet federal safety standards because the nipples can separate from the base easily, posing a choking hazard to infants and toddlers.

Plum Organics Recalls Apple & Carrot Portable Pouches

Plum Organics voluntarily recalled a small portion of their Apple & Carrot Portable Pouches after a routine test determined the formulation was incorrect. Plum Organics immediately investigated the matter and confirmed that a mixing error was to blame which resulted in an improper blend of carrots and apples.

These pouches were sold individually at Toys-R-Us and Babies-R-Us locations nationally.

The pouches recalled have the best by date of May 21, 2010 and marked with the following number “890180001221” located at the bottom of the package. No illnesses have been reported in connection with this product and no other Plum Organics products are affected.

The recall was undertaken as a precaution due to the risk of potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum, which can cause botulism, a serious and sometimes lifethreatening condition. Consumers should not use these products, even if they appear to be normal, because of the possible health risk. Symptoms of botulism poisoning in humans include general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.

Recent Recalls from the CPSC

The CPSC released the following recall information in the last two weeks:

• Target Recalls Circo Booster Seats Due to Fall Hazard
  The booster seat restraint buckle can open unexpectedly, allowing a child to fall from the chair and be injured. Target has received eight reports of the booster seat buckles opening unexpectedly, including three reports of bruises. If you have this, you should immediately stop using the booster seat and return the item to the nearest Target store to receive a full refund.
• Jump ‘n Jive Doorway Jumpers Recalled by Graco Due to Choking Hazard
  The recalled doorway jumpers include detachable toys that are attached to the jumper straps with strips of hook and loop fabric. The strips of fabric are not permanently attached to the toys and can become detached during use, posing a choking hazard. No injuries have been reported. You should immediately stop using the recalled product and remove and discard the detachable toys and the attaching fabric strips and call the manufacturer for a replacement set of toys.
• Dorel Juvenile Group Expands Recall of Safety 1st Stair Gates Due to Fall Hazard
  The hinges that hold the stair gate in place can break, posing a fall hazard to children if the gate is placed at the top of the stairs. The recall involves the Safety 1st SmartLight Stair Gate with model number 42111, which is printed on a sticker under the handle panel. No reported injuries. You should stop using the recalled gate and contact the company to obtain a free repair kit.
• Baby Hammocks Recalled by Kaplan Early Learning Due to Fall and Strangulation Hazards
• Little Tikes Recalls Clubhouse Swing Sets Due to Fall Hazard; New Assembly Directions to Be Provided
• BabySwede LLC Recalls Bouncer Chairs Due to Laceration Hazard

Kolcraft Recalls 1 Million Play Yards Due to Fall Hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Kolcraft announced a voluntary recall of Kolcraft, Carter’s, Sesame Street, Jeep, Contours, Care Bear and Eric Carle Play Yards. This recall affects an estimated 1 million units.

The play yard’s side rail can fail to latch properly. When a child pushes against the rail it can unlatch unexpectedly, and pose a fall hazard to children. There have been 347 reports of sides of the play yard collapsing unexpectedly, resulting in 21 injuries to young children, including bumps, scrapes, bruises and one concussion.

The Play Yards were sold between January 2000 through January 2009.

Important Recall for the Holiday Weekend

Aqua-Leisure Industries, in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is voluntarily recalling it Inflatable Baby Floats due to a drowning hazard. About 4 million floats have been sold at retailers nationwide, including Target, Toys “R” Us, Wal-Mart, Dollar General, Kmart, Walgreens, Ace Hardware, and Bed, Bath & Beyond from December 2002 through June 2009.

The leg straps in the seat can tear, and causing children to unexpectedly fall into or under the water, posing a risk of drowning. There have been 31 reports of float seats tearing, causing children to fall into or under the water. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.

The recalled inflatable baby floats were sold in a variety of styles and colors, including the one pictured to the right.

Consumers should immediately stop using these recalled inflatable baby floats and contact Aqua-Leisure for a full refund.

Bugaboo Recalls Strollers Due to Risk of Brake Failure

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission today announced a voluntary recall of Bugaboo Bee Strollers. One or both sides of the brakes can fail, causing a stroller to unexpectedly roll away on an incline. No injuries have been reported. Strollers were sold between August 2007 through April 2009. Consumers should stop using the strollers immediately and contact Bugaboo to receive a free repair kit.

Lead Exposure Recalls (CPSIA)

Add three more recalls this week for products due to increased risk of lead exposure that were manufactured in China. The recalls include:

• Lip Gloss Keychains Recalled By Markwins Beauty Products Due to Risk of Lead Exposure
• High School Musical Manicure Kits Recalled by Fantas-Eyes Due to Risk of Lead Exposure
• Discount School Supply Recalls Jesus Fish Beads Due to Violation of Lead Paint

Unfortunately, these are further examples of why the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 is needed in some form and again emphasize the need to mandate products brought into the US, especially from China. The shame is that the government is "throwing the baby (products) away with the bath water," and many small business in the US making safe products free of lead are getting caught in the crossfire. It is also a shame that the already understaffed Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is spending innumerable hours answering calls and letters, hearing testimony, and wading through mountains of paperwork, while they could be overseeing that more of these unsafe products are stopped before harming our children. Both of these unfortunate consequences because of a law that was not well thought out.

We at Goodies for Mom hope that a solution is found quickly that will allow for all of these wonderful small businesses to stay in business and create the fabulous, safe children's items that we often feature here, while keeping our children safe.
