More than 30,000 students from middle schools across the country have participated in the 17th Annual National Engineers Week Future City™ Competition. This year’s theme is "water. " Students are asked to design systems to conserve and reuse one of the earth's most precious resources.
In January, each of the 39 regions held qualifying competitions to select the team that will represent it in the Future City Competition National Finals to be held in Washington DC on February 17 & 18 during National Engineers Week.
Sponsored by the nation’s professional engineering community, Future City is one of the nation’s largest engineering education programs. Their goal is to raise interest in science, technology, engineering and math among young people.
For this year's competition, students conducted research for an essay with this year’s theme being “Creating a Self-Sufficient System Within the Home That Conserves, Recycles and Reuses Existing Water Sources.” It centers on ways to improve water use by creating a home system that minimizes the use of municipal or externally supplied water for its daily requirements.
The first-place national team will win a trip to Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, sponsored by Bentley Systems, Incorporated. The second place team receives a $5,000 scholarship for its school’s technology program. The third place receives a $2,000 scholarship for that school’s technology program. Bentley will also provide a 10-seat academic suite of engineering software for each school of the top three teams.

It's so neat to see schools teaching children early on how to work with the planet and be green consciencious. It's so nice to come visit the blogs from the Bloggy Carnival now that I have time to both read and comment.
