On January 26, 2009 for only the second time in recorded American history, a woman gave birth to live octuplets. The unidentified woman gave birth at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center in southern California. Originally thinking there were "only" seven babies, they all received a surprise when baby #8 made its entrance into the world. The plan is for the two girls and six boys to remain in the hospital for about another two months due to their premature birth. If all babies leave the hospital, as doctors are expecting, this will be a record because the only other birth of live octuplets resulted in the smallest, unfortunately, dieing a week after birth, and never leaving the hospital.
It is reported she plans to breastfeed them. Although it is reported that a mother's milk supply increases with demand, it is questionable as to where physically she can do it and if there are enough hours in the day to actually accomplish all those feedings. A representative of Lansinoh Laboratories says they are planning to plans to send the mother a double electric breast pump and a year’s supply of freezer storage bags and bottles.
Goodies for Mom, sends congratulations and wishes the new family the best!
